Portrait of a Drone Killer: ‘I Have a Duty, and I Execute My Duty’
by William Grigg
July 30, 2012
|
One wonders if drone pilot Col. D. Scott Brenton listens to Louis Armstrong in the suburban Air National Guard Base in Syracuse from which he murders people 7,000 miles away.
Brenton tells the New York Times:
"I see mothers with children, I see fathers with children, I see fathers with mothers, I see kids playing soccer."
Drone operators see their intended targets 'wake up in the morning, do their work, go to sleep at night,' explains Dave, another high-tech murderer who killed from an office cockpit at Nevada’s Creech Air Force Base and who now trains new recruits to the cyber-killer corps at New Mexico’s Holloman Air Force Base.
When instructed to kill someone he has stalked from the air for a prolonged period:
"I feel no emotional attachment to the enemy.
I have a duty, and I execute my duty."
When the deed is done, he points out, nobody "in my immediate environment is aware of anything that has occurred."
Another drone operator named Will insists:
"There was a good reason for killing the people that I did, and I go through it in my head over and over and over."
Will like Dave served a deskbound 'combat' tour at Creech and now trains others to do likewise at Holloman Air Base.

Campaign to 'humanize' state functionaries who murder by remote control
Like the soldier Bates in Henry V, it’s sufficient for Will and others of his ilk to render obedience to their Leader, confident that 'if his cause be wrong, our obedience to the king wipes the crime of it out of us.'
The more concise and notorious formula, of course, is: We are only obeying orders.
Besides, drone operators who insist on being called 'combat pilots' are carrying out an indispensable function by picking off Afghan 'militants' or at least those 'suspected' of such tendencies who unreasonably resent the presence of foreign military personnel in their country.
The New York Times profile is part of a campaign by the state-aligned media to 'humanize' the state functionaries who murder by remote control.
And to normalize this mode of mass murder as drones become part of the domestic apparatus of surveillance, regimentation, and repression.
Readers are invited to share the anguish of these conflicted people, who for reasons of duty have to do terrible but necessary things.
In her book 'Eichmann in Jerusalem,' Hannah Arendt offered a glimpse into the mindset of SS personnel who were given a somewhat similar assignment.
|
To carry out their killing errand, she explained, something had to be done 'to overcome not so much their conscience as the animal pity by which all normal men are affected in the presence of physical suffering.'
"The trick used by Himmler ... was very simple and probably very effective.
It consisted in turning these instincts around, as it were, in directing them toward the self.
So that instead of saying: 'What horrible things I did to people!, the murderers would be able to say: 'What horrible things I had to watch in the pursuance of my duties, how heavily the task weighed upon my shoulders!'"
Not everybody attached to the Regime’s Cyber-Killing Corps is haunted by the horrors he has inflicted on defenseless people halfway around the world.
In a 2009 U.S. Naval Academy lecture, Dr. P.W. Singer of the Brookings Institution made reference to what he called 'predator porn' footage of drone attacks proudly circulated by the people who committed those acts.
In a typical offering, Dr. Singer relates:
"A Hellfire missile drops, goes in, and hits the target, followed by an explosion and bodies tossed into the air."
Singer described one clip of that kind, sent to him by a joystick-wielding assassin, that 'was set to music, the pop song 'I Just Want to Fly' by the band Sugar Ray.'
One deskbound drone jockey told Singer.
"It's like a videogame. It can get a little bloodthirsty. But it's f****g cool."
Singer describes asking a drone pilot, 'what it was like to fight insurgents in Iraq while based in Nevada.'
He said:
"You are going to war for 12 hours, shooting weapons at targets, directing kills on enemy combatants, and then you get in the car and you drive home.
And within 20 minutes, you're sitting at the dinner table talking to your kids about their homework."
Meanwhile, somewhere in Iraq (or Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, or another country yet to be identified), other families are desperately looking through the rubble of their own homes in search of survivors.

Transform Now Plowshares
US mass killing weapons
July 2012
Heroes enter Y-12 nuclear weapons complex that stores bomb-grade uranium for mass killing
“A loving and compassionate Creator invites us to take the urgent and decisive steps to transform the U.S. empire, and this facility, into life-giving alternatives which resolve real problems of poverty and environmental degradation for all.”
|
The action of these brave heroes Sister Megan Rice, Greg Boertje-Obed and Michael R. Walli delivered an indictment citing U.S. Constitutional and Treaty Law as well as the Nuremberg Principles:
“The ongoing building and maintenance of Oak Ridge Y-12 constitute war crimes that can and should be investigated and prosecuted by judicial authorities at all levels.
We are required by International Law to denounce and resist known crimes.”
Plowshares disarmament actions in the US and around the world challenge war-making and weapons of mass destruction.
Y-12 NNSA plans to replace these facilities that produce enriched uranium with a new consolidated Uranium Processing Facility (UPF).
This mass killing budget will cost more than $6.5 billion
May 9, 2013
A jury have decided Sister Megan Rice aged 83, Michael Walli aged 64, and Greg Boertje-Obed aged 56 guilty of causing damage while breaking into a US nuclear defence site.
Prosecutor Jeffrey Theodore in his closing argument:
"We are a nation of laws
You can't take the law into your own hands and force your views on other people."
|
The prosection acknowledged the protesters never got near to nuclear material.
The three face up to 20 years in prison after their conviction for sabotaging the plant, which was first constructed during the Manhattan Project that developed the first nuclear bomb.
Sister Megan Rice:
It is manufacturing that which can only cause death."
Boertje-Obed said:
"Nuclear weapons do not provide security.
Our actions were providing real security and exposing false security."
'Transform Now Plowshares' is from Isaiah 2:4 of the Abrahamic Old Testament Bible:
"They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks."
Court filings show that after Sister Megan Rice, Boertje-Obed and Michael Walli refused to plead guilty to trespassing, prosecutors substituted that charge with a sabotage count that increased the maximum prison term from one year to 20 years.

As someone might trespass onto private property to save a child from a burning building, we are trying to stop drone warfare from killing thousands of miles away in Afghanistan Pakistan Yemen.

Sister Megan Rice: "The evil of killing and destroying people in lands 8,000 miles away, of using bombs targeted by Air Force technicians who control computer-programmed joysticks was and is emblazoned upon my awareness.
I see this form of warfare as an evolution toward human execution fostered in the psyche of a nation by immoral, addictive, excessive and illegal practice of developing more and more nuclear weapons."
Brian Terrel: "One thing that really is haunting me is that one operator said 'I am 7,000 miles away from the killing. I am 18 inches away from the killing.'
One, being the distance between Creech Air Force Base and Afghanistan and the other the distance between his nose and the computer screen and the video he was seeing of human beings being dismembered.
The 7,000 miles between Creech Air Force Base and Kandahar, Afghanistan is an illusion.
We are very, very close.
The harm is imminent.
The harm is real. " |

| Ozone Hole September 24 2006. From September 21-30, 2006 the average area of the ozone hole was the largest ever observed, at 10.6 million square miles. This image, from Sept. 24, the Antarctic ozone hole was equal to the record single-day largest area of 11.4 million square miles, reached on Sept. 9, 2000. Satellite instruments monitor the ozone layer, and we use their data to create the images that depict the amount of ozone. The blue and purple colors are where there is the least ozone, and the greens, yellows, and reds are where there is more ozone. Scientists from NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo., use balloon-borne instruments to measure ozone directly over the South Pole. By Oct. 9, the total column ozone had plunged to 93 DU from approximately 300 DU in mid-July. More importantly, nearly all of the ozone in the layer between eight and 13 miles above the Earth's surface had been destroyed. In this critical layer, the instrument measured a record low of only 1.2 DU., having rapidly plunged from an average non-hole reading of 125 DU in July and August. The numbers mean the ozone is virtually gone in this layer of the atmosphere said David Hofmann director of the Global Monitoring Division at the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory. |

Scratching just below the surface of the Western media's headlines are stories carrying greater implications stories the West believes are better left untold.
'Operation Damascus Volcano' followed weeks of warnings of impending NATO psy-op.
Headlines were overrun by a coordinated NATO-backed 'Free Syrian Army' (FSA) offensive and an assassination bombing in Damascus, timed so close to each other and the UN Security Council vote on sanctions, the vote was pushed back a day.
The attacks dubbed, 'Operation Damascus Volcano' were clearly coordinated with the assassination bombing, designed for psychological impact, and when Syrians reacted with resolve, they quickly collapsed. |
What went unreported until over a week later, were warnings of a potential NATO psychological warfare operation, matching hijacked satellite channels broadcasting false reports with an initially violent but ultimately futile militant offensive to stampede the Syrian government out of power on a wave of confusion and panic.
Syria state television repeatedly had to make warnings of further potential disinformation, panic campaigns.
Western media made some mention of the coordinated NATO sponsored attacks, though not mentioning NATO, when security operations in Damascus concluded in favor of the government.
Even then, reports were limited to 'Tweets' by Western journalists. |
